Montblanc Artisan & Ateliers Privé Collection

Montblanc has launched during the last 20 years a number of superlative pen editions that can be characterised as uber-chic, given the exclusivity of these editions, as well as the materials and labour used, and thus their sky-high values. These, truly, are the pens for very wealthy aficionados!

75th Anniversary "Skeleton" Limited Edition Fountain Pen

In 1999, to celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary, Montblanc innovated a brilliant new concept that revolutionized the pen market forever: the skeleton pen. The result was terrific.

Taking the classic Meisterstück 149 Diplomat and paring it to its essentials, Montblanc revealed the perfection of the design by eliminating all superfluities. The result was this legendary instrument, the world’s first skeleton pen and the most famous and desirable of all limited edition fountain pens. Everything about this writing instrument exudes superiority. The skeleton overlay is crafted of 18K solid yellow gold over a translucent precious resin barrel. The skeleton 75th Anniversary is literally covered with engraving. The pen is engraved with elegant scrollwork on the rings (upper and lower), clip, nib, inner cap-top, including its marvellous patented telescopic piston which bears the name of the master-engraver (C. Schaffo). A brilliant-cut diamond adorns the section, and the cap-top star is luminous mother-of-pearl.

The medium (M)18K gold nib, in large Diplomat size, is richly ornamented. Maybe it is the best example of the penmaker’s art. Every detail, internal and external, reflects the highest standards of craftsmanship and design. The pen comes in a spare domed magnifying box, created by Montblanc exclusively to showcase this pen. This specific display box sports a large built-in 8” lens in its top lid to allow proper magnification while the case bottom has a mirror to reflect back all the incoming light, ceating an illusion of suspended levitation, allowing the light to pass through freely.

As already mentioned, a multitude of factors converges into this pen making it so special (and sought after). First of all, the Montblanc Skeleton LE75 is the first skeleton pen ever produced. A real turning point model in Montblanc history with a significant innovation dimension. It is really a holy grail of the skeletonized pens. Secondly, it is anniversary-model. Only 75 pens were produced to mark the 75th anniversary of Montblanc in 1999.

Moreover, with this model Montblanc inaugurated the Artisan Department (Atelier Privé). So, the Montblanc Skeleton 75 was the first stage in the establishment of a new – and never seen before – level of quality.

The Qing Dynasty Limited Edition Fountain Pen
2002 Edition / 88 Edition / 8 Edition

In Europe as long ago as the Middle Ages, China was spoken of with reverence as a civilisation rich in artistic and cultural tradition. Stories were told of the finest porcelain, wafer-thin paper, precious silk and legendary stone that was worked by expert hands into an exotic material, jade. During the Qing Dynasty, Chinese master craftsmen used this fascinating material to create unique sculptures and everyday objects that helped shape a whole epoch.

The special Theme Edition Qing Dynasty LE2002 pays tribute to this great era of Chinese culture. An outstanding feature of the pen is the cap, which is made of pure jade and surrounded by a lovingly hand-engraved dragon with five claws – the Chinese symbol of happiness, strenght and long life. The 750 18K gold nib, which is decorated with a dragon, is the finishing touch to this exclusive pen, a winning combination of European craftmanship and Chinese artistic creation.

The Stars and Stripes Limited Edition Fountain Pen
50 Edition / "G.W.Bush" 1 Edition

Montblanc's limited edition Stars and Stripes fountain pen combines one of Montblanc's most celebrated creations with America's most beloved banner. Crafted from 18 karat white gold filigree over translucent precious resin, the pen also features an American flag hand-set with brilliant-cut diamonds (.59 ct.) and rubies (.70 ct.). The cap's top features the classic Montblanc star formed from lustrous mother-of-pearl. The nib is comprised of medium 18K rhodium-plated gold, and is engraved with an American eagle insignia, the same insignia found in the Great Seal of the United States.

The George W. Bush Skeleton Flag fountain pen has become a legend among high-end Montblanc collectors. Handcrafted by Montblanc's elite Ateliers Prives workshop in the months after the 9/11 terror attacks, it was created as a gift for President Bush to show Montblanc's esteem for the American republic and her people in a time of great peril. According to a Montblanc spokesperson, the president was "not able to accept a gift of that nature," presumably due to tax complications. Crafted in 18-carat solid white gold lattice over clear precious resin with the Texas and U.S. flags in brilliant-cut diamonds, rubies and sapphires (262 diamonds, 212 rubies, 85 sapphires).

Andrew Carnegie Fountain Pen
Diamond Edition of 4 / Ruby Edition of 4 / Sapphire Edition of 4

Andrew Carnegie is still considered one of the greatest patrons of culture in the modern world. A Steel tycoon who emigrated from Scotland to the USA, he was firmly convinced that wealthy people were morally obliged to dedicate themselves to charitable works. So he spent more than 350 million dollars - almost his whole fortune - on cultural foundations, public libraries and cultural programs, and on fostering talented art nouveau artists, the most fashionable artists of the day.

This stylish and elegant one of a kind Atelier Prive recalls the artistic style that Carnegie supported so enthusiastically: Art Nouveau. the clip of the pen is a graceful female figure, whose wings wrap around the cap of the pen like a butterfly's. The blue lacquer body provides a striking contrast to this delicate fretwork effect in solid 18-carat white gold. .74 carat Sapphires adorn the top cap ring and the bottom barrel ring with the Montblanc star in fine mother-of-pearl. Finished with a rhodium-plated 18-carat gold nib delicately engraved with a lily, a popular art nouveau motif.

Han Wu-Ti
Edition of 88 / Edition of 8

This Montblanc Edition commemorates Han Wu Ti, the fifth emperor of the Han Dynasty, who ruled China in the 2nd century BC. The Edition 88 fountain pen is made of 18-carat solid yellow gold, with the barrel and cap coated in black enamel. A gold emblem on the cap, embossed by the hands of a master craftsman shows a portrait of the Emperor. Han Wu Ti’s name is set in the barrel in a luminous inset (artistic inlay work employing mother-of-pearl). The uniqueness of each fountain pen is underlined by the hand-engraved edition number on the golden cone. Medium (M) 18-carat gold nib with a five-clawed dragon motif (a Chinese symbol of fortune, strength, and longevity). It comes in a lacquered wooden display box.

Han Wu-Ti's reign lasted from 141 to 87 BC – an impressive 54 years! And during this period Han Wu-Ti, the fifth Emperor of the Han dynasty, formed China like few other rulers before or after him. He defeated the nomadic Hsiung-nu, who was his empire’s worst enemies and doubled the size of his realm with many wars of conquest, campaigning in all directions. These activities by the eldest son of Emperor Ching Ti, born as Liu Ch’e in the year 157 BC, earned him the honorary title of Wu – “The Warlike”. But Han Wu-Ti was more than just a conqueror; he also laid the foundation stone for a highly-developed central administration. As Emperor he established China’s first University, had all of his officials educated there and obliged them, on principle, to accept Confucianism – which he adopted as the state religion. Only those who had a sound knowledge of classical Chinese literature and philosophy and were prepared to subject themselves to a strict code of values were regarded as suited to serve the Empire.

Despite his wars, Han Wu-Ti was also a committed defender of China’s cultural heritage. He had a large library built, in which he proceeded to gather the literary treasures of the Empire. He was also a lover of “old music” and founded a ministry for collection of the songs of the forefathers. But Han Wu-Ti was also a sponsor of contemporary art: he supported, for example, the new and sumptuous lyrical form of “fu”, which blossomed during his reign. Indeed the Emperor occasionally composed Fu poems of his own, although neither he nor any other achieved the mastery of the famous poet Sima Xiangru, who repeatedly delighted Han Wu-Ti with further examples of his richly ornamented verse.

Beethoven 9th Symphony
3 Series- Yellow Gold & Diamonds 9 Edition / White Gold & Diamonds 9 Edition / White Gold & Sapphires 9 Edition

Montblanc paid tribute to one of Ludwig van Beethoven's greatest works - the 9th Symphony. The symphony No. 9 in D minor is Beethoven's final complete symphony. It was the first time a major composer used voices in a symphony. The words are from the "Ode to Joy" poem written by Friedrich Schiller. The premiere of Symphony No. 9 was held on May 7, 1824, in the Karntnertortheater in Vienna. This was the first on-stage appearance Beethoven made in twelve years. It is said that there were five standing ovations during the symphony and jubilant applause at the end of many sections. At the end of the Symphony, there were handkerchiefs, hats, and raised hands in the air. Although Beethoven was almost completely deaf he could still see the standing ovation and gestures.

Montblanc created 3 series of a masterpiece that celebrates Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, which some people say is the greatest piece of music ever written. The cap is made of real onyx and features a solid gold portrait of Beethoven set with black and white diamonds. The barrel is created in solid gold while the musical clefs are inlaid with lacquer and set with diamonds (approx. 0.18k in total). The clip and rings are also in solid gold.

Both the Yellow and White Gold and Diamonds editions have the clefs inlaid with diamonds, whilst the White Gold and Sapphires Edition have sapphires instead of the diamonds.

Cardinal Richelieu
2 Series -> Edition of 40 / Edition of 8

When Jean Armand Richelieu proclaimed the founding of the Academie Française on February 22, 1635, he had already reached the zenith of his power. By diplomatic skill and ambition he rose from the position of an insignificant provincial priest to become Cardinal and First Minister to Louis XIII. He succeeded in preventing the fragmentaion of France and uniting the nation under the authority of the King. In order to extend this policy of unification to the language and culture, Richelieu created the Academie Française as an official body insitutionalized by the King. Even today the Academie enjoys the personal protection of the French head of state.

With the same passion as displayed by Cardinal Richelieu in protecting and promoting the French language, Montblanc has developed a pen which pays tribute to the founder of the Academie Francaise. A filigree pattern of the olive groves entwines itself around the 750 solid gold barrel. The Montblanc star, made of mother of pearl, is embedded in a masterfully worked cone. A portrait of Cardinal Richelieu is 750 solid gold inlaid with 30 diamonds is artistically set into the cap made of highly polished black onyx. The engraving of his coat of arms on the 18-carat gold nib completes this exceptional pen which is devoted to an immortal patron of the French language.

A Tribute to Salvador Dali
Edition of 100

Salvator Felipe Jacinto Dali’ y Domenech was born in Figueres, Spain, on 11 May 1904, the son of a notary. Encouraged by a friend of the family, he discovered his love of art and his exeptional painting talent while still at school. Having obtained his school-leaving certificate, he entrolled at the famous Academy of San Ferdinando in 1922 to study art. During the course of the next few years, Dali’ proceeded to perfect his different techniques, but he refused to sit the final examination on the graunds that he did not consider the professors sufficiently competent to judge his accomplishment. The successes he amassed upon graduating from the Academy proved him right. On a visit to Paris in 1929, Dali’ made the aquaitance of Gala Eluard who, married and 10 years his senior, was to become his companion and, above all, his muse and source of inspiration. It was thanks to her support that Dali’ achieved his breakthrough as one of the world’s greatest Surrealist artist, who was decorated for his work with the highest honour awarded in Spain, the Grand Cross of the Order of Carlos III. Salvador Dali’ died on January 1989. His remains were laid to rest in the Teatro-Museo Dali’ de Figueras, which he himself created as his greatest Surrealist work. To mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, Montblanc is dedicating an edition of unique writing utensils to this unforgettable artist: the “ A Tribute to Salvator Dali’” Limited Edition.

It quickly became evident that Dali’ possessed an extraordinary talent; today he his considered one of the most important Surrealist artists. The year 1929 was decisive in the life of the painter. In collaboration with the filmmaker Luis Bunuel, he showed the film “Un chien andalou” in Paris, a film which served as a letter of introduction to the artistic and cultural circles of Paris and which assured his place in the group of Surrealists led by André Breton. During the early thirties Dali’ discovered his own style, his own particular language and form of expression which were always to remain with him and, although his style would continue to change and develop, were what deep down we are familiar with and which so clearly distinguishes him – a mixture of avant-garde and tradition. Like the artists of the Renaissance, Dali’ was not content to limit himself to a single medium of artistic expression. He branched out, turning into a multi-faceted artist: painter, writer, cartoonist, sculptor, designer, stage designer, illustrator, filmmaker. In all these manifestations, he is Dali’.

Inspired by the lines of perspective that are typical for Dali's works of art, a wavy guilloche pattern accentuates the tapering barrel of the 750 white and yellow gold fountain pen. The Montblanc star Mother of Pearl puts the finishing touch to the cone of the skeleton overlay cap, engraved with a filigree replica of Dali's signature. The clip of the fountain pen takes the form of a fork, a characteristic feature of many of his paintings, topped with a finely crafted wheel. With the masterfully worked portrait of Salvador Dali on the 18-carat gold nib and a limited edition of 100 pieces designed to commemorate the centennial of his birth this year, this edition pays tribute to an immortal artist.

Montblanc is paying the highest tribute to this philanthropic mission with an exclusive writing instrument: the Rotary Centennial Limited Edition 100. The peaceful coexistence of various cultures, one of the Rotary Club’s most important missions, is symbolized by the design of the pen’s body and cap, on which 18-carat white gold and dark black blend into one harmonious ensemble. The years the Rotary Club was founded and it's 100th anniversary are finely engraved opposite one another on the cap and holder. This interweaving of past and present continues in the masterful rendering of the Rotary Club logo on the clip and the engraving of the very first club emblem on the 18-carat gold nib. The mother of pearl Montblanc star on the top of the cap adds the crowning touch to this limited edition writing instrument, issued in honor of the Rotary Club International’s 100th anniversary

The body of these pens are made of Meissen porcelain and hand-painted images of theater scenes. The cap is made of pure 18-carat gold, and is richly decorated with precious stones. The 18-carat gold nibs are engraved with a schematic representation of the castle Hohensalzburg. As in previous years, the collection is made in three different colour versions. Precious stones that adorn the cap match the colour versions: the blue version of the cap is decorated with sapphires, a red uses rubies and there is an emerald green version.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser
Edition of 100

Friedensreich Hundertwasser was an unconventional artist, a painter, architect, and ecologist. He caused controversy around the world with his works, some of which were not completed until after his death. Hundertwasser's works ranged from complete rejection to thunderous applause. He was not only Vienna's foremost eccentric artist but one of Austria's most well-known personalities. Hundertwasser is well known for his abstract works which always featured a diversity of colours. He gained experience from his extensive trips to countries such as Italy, France, Morocco, and Japan.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser used colourful ornaments, swooping contours, and spirals in his works. In fact, Hundertwasser hated straight lines and right angles, he called them the "Devil's tools". Spirals were somewhat of a signature of Hundertwasser, he saw them as symbols that represent life, infinity, and freedom. In 1958, Hundertwasser had banned straight lines from all of his architectural drawings. He replaced them with spirals and formed organic buildings. He made dancing windows, ornamental facades, and multi-coloured towers with onion domes. He made his fantasy buildings come to life.

Montblanc honours Hundertwasser with this unique limited edition. Beautifully inspired by Hundertwasser, this limited edition takes on a subtle twisted design with colorful gemstones in the cap which resemble Hunderwasser's colourful ornamental work. This creation is made in solid yellow gold and features an 18-carat gold nib with a filigree engraving which illustrates a typical Hundertwasser house with extravagant towers and fluid facades.

Pablo Picasso
Edition of 91 / Edition of 39 / Edition of 1

Pablo Picasso, born in Málaga in 1881, started to paint at the early age of seven and a mere two years later completed his first oil painting, “Le Picador”. It was the start of an unequalled artistic career whose beginnings got underway in his fatherʼs painting classes. Its first highlights occurred with his blue and pink period from 1901 to 1906, when Picasso combined the achievements of Art Nouveau with the image contents of Symbolism to result in a tangible formula. Only one year later, Picasso and his work Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), characterised by geometric cshape, became the spiritual father of Cubism and a pioneer of modernism. Until his death in 1973 in Mougins, France, the artistic genius of the twentieth century produced more than 50,000 works ranging from drawings to ceramics and from poetry to sculpture and painting. These works include the dove of peace and his most famous work, “Guernica”, which depicted the destruction of the city of the same name during the Spanish Civil War. It was displayed for the first time at the International Fair in Paris in 1937, where it received the highest accolades. Even today, we are still impressed by the unique language of the shapes that will endure forever, along with their legendary creator, Pablo Picasso. Just as the painter Picasso, the poet Picasso also had a close connection between his art subjects and Spain. With untamed passion and near-insanely associative images, he built a literary legancy of unique value between 1935 and 1959. Refusing to be bound any classification and far from grammatical rules, this extraordinary artist wrote three plays , as well as 300 poem that were created in diary notes and range from simple prose to expressionist short texts. Picasso’s impressive literary legancy was published for the first time in 1973, taking the reader onto a fascinating journey to sensual levels of unique poetry and surprising diversity based on something very special: the love of the Painter of the century for the written word.

Edition of 91

Design Features: the skeletonized 750 solid gold cap offers the view on the Medium (M) rhodium-plated 18-carat gold nib and is engraved with Picasso’s comments and sketches on his work “Portrait de jeune fille”. This famous piece of art cap, with the distinctive trait of the portrait being pictured by the artfully crafted clip. The cap top is adorned with an embedded Montblanc emblem made if mother-of-pearl. The 18-carat gold nib is decorated with a fine engraving of Picasso’s famous signet “ojo”. Picasso’s Spanish origin is masterfully visualised on the cone: the composition of red lacquered stripes between rings made of 750 solid gold represents the national colours of Spain. The barrel is made of black precious lacquer with a shape reminiscent of the simple pencils Picasso used for many of his sketches.

Wassily Kandinsky
2 Series -> Edition of 77 / Edition of 3

Montblanc paid homage to Russian-born painter Wassily Kandinsky, one of the most influential abstract painters of all time, with the Kandinsky Artisan Edition pens. The prolific painter is credited with creating one of the first truly abstract works of art, and his legacy is expertly honoured with Montblanc’s Limited Edition 77 and Limited Edition 3 fountain pens — whose visual motifs are inspired by the artist’s 1925 masterpiece Yellow-Red-Blue. The solid-gold Limited Edition 77 features a lacquer barrel with color gradations similar to those of the painting. Its skeletonized cap is decorated with geometric shapes and colorful lacquer inlays, while the artist’s signature adorns its base.

Along with its cap, the white-gold Limited Edition 3’s barrel also gets the skeletonized treatment. The piece pops with color, thanks to the rubies and blue and yellow sapphires that adorn both the cap and barrel. Crowning the cap is a .11-carat Montblanc diamond encircled by two rings of smaller diamonds.

Marco Polo
The Silk Road Edition of 69 / The Great Khan Edition of 9 / L'azzuro Edition of 3 / Il Milione Edition of 1

"Silk Road Edition"

With a limitation number honouring the 69 years of a life filled with outstanding achievements, the shape of the fountain pen evokes one of the bamboo forests that Marco Polo discovered during his passage through southern Tibet. For the first time ever, Damask steel has been incorporated into the cap of a Montblanc writing instrument. The choice of metal is reminiscent of the mysterious history behind Damascus steel made in the Middle East from steel shipped from India, as featured in the fascinating story from “Il Milione“. Contrasting with the Damask steel, the barrel is crafted from precious rosewood, the exquisite material that the ancient Chinese used to create the most fascinating rosewood furniture pieces. The gold bars on the side of the cap represent Marco Polo’s trip as written in his book: 28 stops from Venice to Quanzhou, 10 stops back to Venice. The deep blue Lapis lazuli stone in the cone symbolizes the globe. The special design of a camel in the desert etched into the Au750 champagne gold nib also evokes the Catalan Atlas.

"Il Milione Edition"

Mirroring the extravagance and riches of the imperial Mongolian court, the Homage to Marco Polo “Il Milione” Limited Edition 1 is a dazzling display of gem-setting virtuosity on one of the most elaborate writing instruments every created by Montblanc. The design takes its inspiration from the years Marco Polo spent trading precious stones while serving the great Khan, the most powerful king on earth at that time. The rich colours and the shape of the extended cap draw inspiration from the typical Coromandel lacquer folding screens made by the finest artisans in the Orient. When removed, the cap set with a full pavée of dark red rubies and cognac tone diamonds, reveals a barrel that features a diamond-set world map inspired by Marco Polo’s travels. The pen’s clip is shaped like the golden pass (paiza) given to him by Kublai Khan that guaranteed he was given safe passage throughout the Khan’s expansive kingdom. The cap ring displays various creatures from the wild and fantastic world he experienced as told in Il Milione. A reference to one of his most important navigation tools, a compass rose is worked into the cap top under the Montblanc emblem, revealing itself thanks to a special mechanism. On the other end of the writing instrument, the skeletonized gold cone is set with a majestic 6,12ct diamond. The Au750 solid champagne gold nib design is a representation of Marco Polo crossing the desert, taken from the most important map of the medieval period: the Catalan Atlas.

Johannes Kepler
High Pede Serpentari Edition of 39 / Astronomia Nova Edition of 9 / Somnium Edition of 5 / Stella Nova Edition of 1

Since the dawn of time mankind has looked at the skies above in awe, yet only a handful of individuals have successfully unlocked the mysteries of the universe, pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. One of those brilliant minds was Johannes Kepler (1571- 1630), a formidable mathematician, astronomer, and astrologer, who uncovered the laws of planetary motion, laying the foundations for the development of modern astronomy. Considered by some as the first astrophysicist in the history of science, this free spirit and scientific revolutionary moved beyond hypothetical observations to demonstrate the movement of the planets through mathematical and experimental research.

In honour of a pioneer who inspired generations of scientists after him from Newton to Einstein, Montblanc presents the High Artistry Homage to Johannes Kepler Limited Edition. Created by the Montblanc Maison Artisan Atelier, each of these masterpieces illustrates Kepler’s extraordinary dedication in his search for the infinity of the universe taking design cues from the many ground-breaking works he penned during his lifetime.

High Pede Serpentari Edition

The Homage to Johannes Kepler High Pede Serpentari Limited Edition 39 draws inspiration from an illustration from his book “De Stella Nova in Pede Serpentarii” that indicated the location of the 1604 supernova on the foot of the Ophiuchus constellation. The unusual silhouette of the Au750 solid white gold Limited Edition recalls the Kepler telescope developed to observe the heavens with higher magnification than the existing Galileo telescope. The white gold of the cap top, cone and fittings contrast with the deep blue of the lacquer of the cap and barrel, elegantly set with shimmering diamonds to evoke a star-filled night sky. Using Hand Engraving Overlacquering, a special technique used for the first time by Montblanc, intricate three-dimensional hand engravings beneath the lacquer depict the Ophiuchus and Sagittarius constellations that he studied in his De Stella Nova.

The drafting compass used by Kepler inspired the distinctive design of the clip, which is adorned with a princess-cut sapphire. The inspiration for the engraving on the cone of the writing instrument is the elliptical movement of Mars that Kepler described in his Astronomia Nova, while a further engraving inspired by the astronomer’s model of the solar system featured the Mysterium Cosmographicum decorates the bottom of the cone. The discovery described by Kepler in De Stella Nova of the conjunction of Saturn, Jupiter, and the supernova is immortalized on the handcrafted rhodium-coated Au750 gold nib with a precious blue sapphire set on the nib.

High Pede Serpentari Edition of 39

Astronomia Nova Edition

The limited number of the Homage to Johannes Kepler High Artistry Astronomia Nova Limited Edition 9 marks the year 1609 when Kepler first published “Astronomia nova”, regarded as one of the greatest books on astronomy. The Ophiuchus and Sagittarius constellations from his book “De Stella Nova” have been masterfully recreated as a special dual-colour Au750 gold skeletonized overlay, contrasting with the deep blue lacquer underneath. The intricate constellation map is punctuated by sparkling white diamonds representing the bright stars in the sky and other coloured gemstones shining as planets. Inspired by his model of orbits from his Mysterium Cosmographicum, a generous lapis lazuli shaped like a globe sits atop the cap encircled in a sculptural structure made of three rows of pavé diamonds. The forepart of the fountain pen is etched with a delicate drawing of “gravity” from Kepler’s Astronomia Nova. Evoking the winter solstice of 1600 while Kepler was in Prague with his another legendary astronomer Tycho Brahe, the cone features a representation of the sky they observed, set with dazzling diamonds as stars. Engraved on the nib, a drawing of Sun from the Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae is enhanced with a single diamond. A final nod to the genius of Kepler, the bottom of the cone is decorated with a representation of his third planetary law that states that the squares of their orbital periods are proportional to the cubes of the long axes of their orbits.

Astronomia Nova Edition of 9

Somnium Edition

Paying tribute to the five Platonic solids that represent the universe in Kepler’s cosmological theory with a limitation of just five pieces, the Homage to Johannes Kepler High Artistry Somnium Limited Edition 5 is a masterpiece of precision stone-setting with hundreds of sapphires set together to capture the scintillating beauty of the Milky Way. Each stone has been carefully chosen by colour to create a flawless transition. The edition is also the very first writing instrument in the world equipped with an automatic watch movement inspired by Kepler’s drawings of the moon phases.

Montblanc developed this special moon phase complication sitting at the summit of the writing instrument’s cap in the Maison’s manufacture in Villeret in the Swiss Jura. The dual-rotation system allows the Montblanc emblem in precious blue lacquer at the centre to rotate to indicate the functionality of the movement, while the moon phase rotates to indicate the actual moon phase. The dial is made of aventurine, while the bright sides of the four moons pieces are created out of white gold coated in palladium and the darker side are created by flaming treatment.

In order to ensure the full functionality of the moon phase, the writing instrument comes with a special re-winder displayed in a precious handcrafted wooden box. Entirely developed and produced in-house, the re-winder is equipped with a 24V High-Performance Synchronous Motor. The design details tell the story of Kepler’s scientific achievements and discoveries. The Au750 solid gold forepart of the writing instrument is decorated with his drawing of the “Planetary conjunction chart” from De Stella Nova, while the cap top and the cone are intricately etched with sketches of the five platonic solids and the orbits of the planet from Mysterium Cosmographicum. Both the compass-shaped clip and the nib of the fountain pen have been set with precious red rubies.

Somnium Edition of 5

Stella Nova Edition

Just like the exceptionality and rarity of the 1604 Supernova first recorded by Kepler, the most recent supernova in the galaxy to have been unquestionably observed by the naked eye, the Homage to Johannes Kepler High Artistry Stella Nova Limited Edition 1 is one-of-a-kind. With a price of €1.4 million, it masterfully combines the finest materials with the most expert techniques to push the limits of craftsmanship. Its full pavé set cap and barrel shimmers with a multitude of blue sapphires meticulously selected and set to emulate the fascinating night beauty of the Milky Way with its ethereal hues of blues.

In total 570 diamonds and 5294 sapphires adorn the writing instrument. Like the brightest of stars, this edition is crowned by a spectacular of approximately 6,20 ct, DIF Montblanc diamond suspended inside an elaborate three-dimensional white gold structure, with three rings symbolizing Kepler’s Three Laws of Planetary Motion: the law of ellipses, the law of equal areas and the law of harmonies. Contrasting with the deep blue of the sapphires that coat the length of this masterpiece, the white gold fittings, and cone are set with bright diamonds using different techniques from pavé setting to bead setting, demonstrating in one writing instrument the full breadth its gem-setting know-how.

The intricacy of the stone setting mirrors the detailing created by its master-engravers with the forepart of the writing fountain pen decorated with the Ophiuchus constellation from De Stella Nova and the orbit of Mars from Astronomia Nova featured on the bottom of the cone. Adding a final touch of brilliance, a single diamond is set on both the precious AU750 nib and the compass, a reminder of Kepler’s lifelong passion for stars shining in the skies above him.

Hannibal Barca
4 Series -> Edition of 86 / Edition of 10 / Edition of 5 / Edition of 1 (3 variants)

Hannibal Barca, Punic general from Carthage, is considered one of the greatest commanders of antiquity, alongside Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great. He is sometimes referred to as “the father of strategy” because his military tactics were adopted by his great nemesis, Rome. Setting out from Carthaginian-dominated Spain with a small army, he fought his way over the Pyrenees and crossed the Alps with elephants and a full baggage train at the outbreak of the Second Punic War. In his first few years in Italy, he won three battles — at Trebia, Lake Trasimene and Cannae.

This remarkable strategist is the inspiration for another of Montblanc’s high-artistry writing instruments, which is a magical combination of technical virtuosity and boundless creativity. Leaning on the skills and the métiers d’arts that Montblanc’s craftspeople are famous for, this new creation defies the imagination.

The 86 Edition

The High Artistry Homage to Hannibal Barca Limited Edition 86 makes reference to the 86,000 men who crossed the Alps with Hannibal, with 86 pens available. In another design innovation, this pen’s cap is made of wood embellished with a lasered pattern that recalls the panther skin Hannibal and his generals wore to protect their left arm and shoulder. The elephant trunk is made of red gold, its eyes are set with cognac diamonds. The rose-gold nib is decorated with an engraving of a laurel wreath. In reference to his expedition through the Alps, the cap top is made of granite with the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl.
The 86 Edition

The 10 Edition - The Battle of Cannae

This Limited Edition 10 was inspired by the Battle of Cannae, where Hannibal captured 10,000 Roman soldiers, with 10 pens available. This instrument features two design firsts for Montblanc — an anthracite titanium underlay is paired with a white-gold uncoated overlay to create a refined contrast with the two different finishes and a bar fully studded with black onyx has been inserted into the barrel overlay by hand. As a nod to the general’s military prowess, the strategic plan of the Battle of Cannae is engraved in bi-colour on the barrel. The Montblanc emblem that crowns the writing instrument is crafted from white agate set inside rock crystal, a combination reminiscent of the snowy mountains that Hannibal’s army crossed during their military expedition. The cone is shaped like a Carthaginian combat ship’s bow and is set with a single sapphire.
The 10 Edition

The 5 Edition - The Generals

The five great generals in Hannibal’s family are represented by the five pens available. This pen features a cap and barrel in dark blue sapphire with solid champagne gold fittings. The middle of the cap is adorned with an oval gold shield to represent the Punic cuirass armour. For the first time in Montblanc history, the star emblem has been replaced with an engraved and polished 3D model of Mont Blanc in rough rock crystal, as a reference to Hannibal’s crossing of the Alps.
The 5 Edition

The 1 Edition

Limited to just one piece worldwide as a tribute to this fearless individual — and at a price of €1.5 million — the High Artistry Homage to Hannibal Barca Limited Edition 1 features a dazzling combination of gold and diamonds contrasting with a full pavé of other gems. The elephant trunk clip is one of the most sophisticated ever conceived by Montblanc, with the elephant head cap and its trunk individually cut and set by hand.

    Homage to Kyoto Artistry
    Chiso Edition of 55

Chiso was founded in 1555 and has been making kimono for mostly royal and noble classes. Chiso continued its business in Kyoto as it was Japan’s capital for 1200 years from late 8th century to mid 19th century. The Chiso team drew the design motif specifically for this project, from “The Tale of Genji“, authored by Murasaki Shikibu more than 1000 years ago as a very long (54 volumes) love and political story of Genji, a young nobleman. One copy, which belongs to Chiso, shows brilliant color illustrations alongside the text. This pen design was based on two of those illustrations.

The kimono by Chiso uses the style called “Kyo-Yuzen”, which is made through many processes including drawing with pencil on the silk textile, dying along with the drawing, washing, and drying, repeating as many times as the number of the colors used, and finally sewing. Chiso’s proprietary design is relief-engraved on the barrel and the cap of the pen, both in Sterling Silver with Rose Gold highlight fittings, and inlay work with mother-of-pearl logo on top of the cap. The pen is limited edition of only 55 (the number came from Chiso’s founding year, 1555).

    Homage to Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna)
    Edition of 65

Avicenna (original name Ibn Sînâ), born near Bukhara in 980, was one of the most prominent philosophers, scientists, physicians, matematicians, and astronomers of the Islamic golden Age. He is described as the forefather of modern medicine. Born from a Persian family, he soon emerged for his peculiar and early brillance: by the age of ten he had memorized the entire Quran. Although his Persian origins, he wrote the majority of his two hundred and fifty works in Arabic, which was the scientific and philosophical language at the time. Among his masterpieces we find “The Book of Healing”, an encyclopaedia about philosophy and science, and “The Canon of Medicine”, an impressive medical essay. He became interested and started studying medicine at the age of 16 and also spontaneously practiced his knowledge and treatments by helping sick people. When sultan of Bukhara felt ill he was called to his bedside and, as reward for curing him, he was given the permission to consult the royal Sâmânîd library, a treasure of science and philosophy. To honour this great polymath, Montblanc has created the Montblanc Hommage to Avicenna Limited Edition 65.

In the five books of “The Canon of Medicine” Avicenna, influenced by the Greek physician Galen, summarises the complete medical knowledge of his time founding the theoretical basis of medical science. He defined the place of medicine in the hierarchy of sciences by postulating that medicine seeks to understand the causes of health and disease. “The Canon of Medicine” was translated in Latin and remained one of the standard medical textbooks in Europe and in the Islamic world for centuries. The pattern on the Au 750 solid gold cap set with turquoise stones is inspired by the fine ornamentation of early medieval manuscripts of “The Canon of Medicine”. The colour of the luminous orange lacquer corresponds to the garment worn by Avicenna in one of his most famous portraits. The clip is set with a green facetted tourmaline, while the cap top is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in mother of pearl.

Avicenna brought also important innovations to Islamic philosopy focusing his studies on logic, ethics and metaphysics. In his Book of Healing, he inquired the questiong of being by following Aristotele’s considerations and finally distingued theology by metaphysics. He had a systematic treatment of all the sciences and was the first able to assign a defined function to each one of them, providing a sound and coherent epistemological framework for teachers of the medieval curriculum. The Au gold handcrafted nib of this Limited Edition bears an engraving inspired by one of the most precise depictions of the human anatomy, published in “The Canon of Medicine”.

He also gave contributions to mathematics, physics, astronomy, music and other fields. He discussed the philosophy of science, describing a new scientific methodology according to which conceptualisation and verification are essential. In the field of dynamics, Avicenna developed the key concept of inclination. Though he did not accept the existence of void, he put forward the hypothesis that if the void were to exist, then a thrown projectile would keep its trajectory without stopping or deviating. This theory has been characterised by scholars as an anticipationof the modern concept of inertia. In optics, Avicenna rejected the extramission theory of vision built from the mathematical models of Euclid and Ptolemy. This criticism led to a new conception of the nature of light and rays. For Avicenna, vision occurs in the medium that separates the eye from the visible object. The object must be able to affect the medium separating it from the eye. This medium must be transparent and the perceptive faculty in the eye must sense this change. This doctrine combining a theory of vision with a theory of light is the precursor to modern optical theories. In one of his treatises Avicenna described a more effective instrument for astronomical observations. The new sighting system of this instrument was much more precise than the existing ones, allowing the reading of degrees and minutes. Avicenna’s observations on the medicinal effects of mother-of-pearl were the source of inspiration for the extraordinary material of the Limited Edition’s barrel: shimmering, black mother-of-pearl from the Tahiti shell.

In the Middle East, Avicenna’s heritage is highly valued. As a philosopher he elaborated a new philosophical synthesis, which fostered the renewal of philosophy in Iran in the seventeenth century. This legacy is still studied today in traditional centres of knowledge. As a man of science, he remains an icon for the rigour and systematic nature of his thought. In tribute to this universal genius, a mausoleum was erected in his memory in Hamadan, where he was buried. The first mausoleum, destroyed in 1950, was replaced by a modern monument designed by Hooshang Seyhoun in 1952. It includes a library, a small museum and a spindle-shaped tower. The tower is inspired by the medieval Gonbad-e Qabus tower, an impressive monument built in 1006 near the ancient city of Gorgan, where Avicenna spent some years of his life. The shape of the cone of the Montblanc Homage to Avicenna Limited Edition is inspired by the striking tower of the Avicenna Mausoleum. The end of the cone is crowned with a Persian turquoise, a stone discovered thousands of years ago in Persia, and which is considered to have spiritual powers.

Roald Amundsen - Conquest of Antarctica
    Edition of 65 / Edition of 10 / Edition of 5 / Edition of 1 (3 variants)

Montblanc launched the High Artistry limited editions to commemorate the wonderful life and achievements of Roald Amundsen (1872 - 1928), the first explorer in history to reach the North and the South Pole. With its infinite creativity and superb craftsmanship, the new collection combines the brand's more than 110 years of craftsmanship and high-precision technology to highlight Amundsen's heroic and fearless adventures. Under the exquisite craftsmanship of Montblanc Craftsmen's Workshop, created an exquisite work that is beyond imagination. This Montblanc's editions use a variety of techniques such as gemstone cutting, inlaying, stone carving, hand engraving, bone carving, and leather making. Montblanc's "Conquering the Antarctic Series" combines jewelry art and writing culture with a dazzling design to recognize this heroic explorer who has developed polar knowledge for humanity.

    The 1 Edition - Ice

The pen is inspired by the vision that the great explorer first saw the ice and snow of Antarctic. The pen cover and the pen body adopt complex Double-layered gemstone inlay, full of diamonds, light blue sapphires and aquamarine, this is the first gem setting used by Montblanc to add a sense of luxury to writing instruments. Before the commencement of the South Pole expedition, Amundsen learned many skills from the Inuit, including the construction of an igloo, hunting, fishing, dog sled to transport supplies, etc., so this set the theme of the writing instrument design such as: a mosaic removable igloo done in individual cut diamonds, covering a secret-style mosaic Montblanc emblem in diamonds. After the igloo is removed, a 5.10-carat diamond can be placed underneath the inner dome. The Au750 white gold shows an engraved amulet worn by the Inuit and is set with sapphires and diamonds. The rhodium-plated gold nib is set with two diamonds. The design of the front end of the writing instrument originated from the route of Amundsen to the South Pole by boat. The shape of the clip was taken from a snow knife called “pana” by the Inuit, a tool used to cut and shape ice cubes.

The 1 Edition - The Northern Lights

The pen is inlaid with a variety of fascinating colorful gemstones, the design of the pen cover and the pen body is reminiscent of the ethereal Arctic light. The surface of the pure white gold writing instrument is fully inlaid with various gemstones: amethyst, emerald, tourmaline, peridot, saffron, and green sapphire. Underneath the Diamond Dome, there is a huge green emerald that can be removed separately. The white gold rhodium-plated pen is set with pink and blue-purple sapphires, saffron stones and diamonds, like the colorful Northern Lights. Diamonds and amethysts on the pen ring and the snow knife styling clip are cut with a bright princess cut to further enhance the brightness of the writing instrument. The front end of the writing instrument uses the Scheffler stone to outline the route of Amundsen and presents the Antarctic land with blue-violet sapphires. The white gold nib is embellished with traditional Inuit tattoos and set with two saffron stones.

The 1 Edition - The Arctic Night

This writing instrument is designed like the deep blue sky of the Artic, with a black rhodium and rhodium-plated pure white gold pen cover and a blue sapphire in the pen body. Paraiba's tourmaline is full of luster. A 5.42-carat Burmese blue sapphire is embedded under the Diamond Dome on the pen's cap. The end of the barrel is inspired by the amulets worn by the Inuit and inlaid with blue and orange sapphires. The pen ring and pen holder of the writing instrument are inlaid with brilliant cut blue sapphires, adding to the beauty of the night of this writing instrument.

    The 5 Edition

    The 10 Edition - Scrimshaw

The exquisite carving on the mammoth ivory was created by the world-famous bone carving master Richard Maier in 480 hours. The pen cover is engraved with the famous "Advance" expedition ship that Amundsen traveled to the Antarctic expedition. The bone sculpture is a photo taken by Roald Amundsen and the sled dog he relied on at the South Pole of the Norwegian flag (photographed in 1911). The white gold igloo at the top of the pen cap is inlaid with a brilliant cut diamond to show the pure colour of the snow. The pure white gold ring and snow knife styling clip are set with brilliant princess cut diamonds.

    Homage to Emperor Kang Xi
    4 Series -> Edition of 89 / Edition of 10 / Edition of 5 / Edition of 1 (3 variants)

The Imperial Dragon, Royal Blue Dragon, Jade Dragon, Calligrapher, Hunter, General and the Emperor, these are the names of Montblanc’s latest High Artistry Limited-Editions, created to honour Kang Xi, one of China’s greatest emperors as well as the longest reigning. The seven designs are part writing instruments and part jewellery creations in an impressive display of the Maison’s artistry.

The 89 Edition - The General

The armour-inspired design of the Homage to Emperor Kangxi Limited Edition 89, is a tribute to the imperial power and authority. The cap and barrel in AU750 yellow gold feature a special pattern reminiscent of the ceremonial suit of armour the emperor wore for parades. The gold contrasts with the black PVD coated fittings of the fountain pen. The birch used on the lower barrel is the wood traditionally associated with hunting bows in the Qing dynasty. The symbol of longevity and decorative lotus plants are carefully lasered onto the thin birch wood using ultraviolet technology to protect the surface of the precious wood. The barrel is embellished with an archer’s ring made of tiger’s eye, while the base of the cone features a yellow citrine cabochon. The summit of the pen features the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl.

The 10 Edition - The Calligrapher

The Homage to Emperor Kangxi Limited Edition 10, celebrates the ruler’s passion for literature and writing with a poem carved on the black jade cap and barrel of the fountain pen. A reference to his favourite hunting animal, tiger’s head in yellow sapphires and black rhodium coated gold adorns the writing instrument’s barrel. Secret inscriptions are engraved on the cap including a work of calligraphy by Kangxi that pays tribute to a poem by Tao Yuanming, hidden under a white gold shield that can be opened. A yellow sapphire shines at the base of the cone, and two yellow sapphires shine on the clip shaped like the ruyi, Kangxi would hold to represent his power.

The 5 Edition - The Emperor

During his trips across his vast empire, Kangxi had paintings commissioned of the landscapes and communities he visited on journeys such as the grand Southern inspection tour. The solid gold cap and barrel of the Homage to Emperor Kangxi Limited Edition 5, The Emperor feature cloisonné enamel creating the effect of painted landscapes in tones of yellows, greens and sand punctuated with threads of gold. The cap top features an original opening mechanism that reveals a miniature gold sundial, one of the instruments brought to the emperor from Europe that he was fascinated by. The gold cone tube of the writing instrument is engraved by hand with a dragon, set with yellow diamonds and the cone is set with a sparkling diamond (DFL, approx. 2ct). The barrel ring features a dragon, symbol of power, hand-carved in green Wyoming jade, while the rings and clip are embellished with a sprinkling of yellow diamonds to enhance the intensity of this homage to Kangxi’s legacy.

The 1 Edition - The Imperial Dragon

A majestic dragon made of individually cut white jade pieces and a line of brilliant cut diamonds swirls around the Montblanc High Artistry Homage to Emperor Kangxi Limited Edition 1, The Imperial Dragon fountain pen in an artistic representation of the emperor’s supreme power in champagne gold. Like the rich yellow silk of the emperor’s gown, the cap and barrel of the writing instrument are set with a full pave of yellow diamonds. The cap is cut in the shape of one of his sleeves, as depicted in imperial portraits of the powerful ruler. Inspired by his fascination for mechanical devices and clocks, the cap top features a mechanism that drives the movement of the dragon’s eyes, opening and closing them whether the pen is upright or laying down. A reference to Kangxi’s enthusiasm for Western astronomy, the design of the cone is inspired by an armillary sphere created to represent the movements in the heavens. A 2-axis mechanism allows a 6,42 carat square emerald-cut yellow diamond in a vivid yellow-orange colour to rotate freely at its centre. Thanks to a special mechanism, the precious ornament can be detached and admired as a standalone jewel. Crowning the writing instrument, the cap top is adorned with diamonds in a pavé setting, and the clip is set with a natural white pearl. The Au750 solid gold nib is decorated with the dragon’s head.

The 1 Edition - The Royal Blue Dragon

The Homage to Emperor Kangxi Limited Edition 1, is a masterpiece in blue and white gold inspired by the deep colour of one of the emperor’s garments. The pavé of blue sapphires on the cap and barrel contrast with the brilliant diamonds on the dragon encircling the fountain pen, as well as the white gold fittings. The armillary sphere mechanism in the cone of the writing instrument features a brilliant 5ct white diamond (Colour D, Flawless). Mediator between heaven and earth, the dragon on the Montblanc High Artistry Homage to Emperor Kangxi Limited Edition 1, The Jade Dragon seems to float through the clouds. The mythical creature stands out in vibrant green jade against a scintillating pavé of white diamonds on the cap and barrel. A precious red 5,08ct ruby floats inside the axis mechanism in real gold, while the top of the cap is set with a pavé of diamonds.

The 1 Edition - The Hunter

Among Kangxi’s many contributions to Chinese arts and culture, he revived the porcelain industry and initiated a new era of high-quality production at Jingdezhen. Reminiscent of one of the scenes painted on imperial porcelain by Qing dynasty artists, the Hunter brings to life the emperor’s lifelong passion for tiger hunting. By leaning on the rare Grisaille enamel technique, applied using a brush then creating subtle contrasts and shadows using a needle, the cap and barrel emulate white and blue porcelain art depicting hunters riding their horses as they chase tigers in the wild. A reference to archery, the barrel is encircled by an archer’s ring made of jade, and the bottom half of the barrel is embellished with a majestic 3D hard-engraved tiger set with diamonds in pavé. The clip of the fountain pen is shaped like a ruyi, the curved decorative sceptre that symbolizes the emperor’s power and good fortune, and adorned with blue sapphires. Adding to the preciousness of this edition, the solid white gold fittings are enhanced with rows of brilliant diamonds. A dazzling 11,53ct blue sapphire is set at the base of the cone inside the axis design.

    Rudyard Kipling
    Edition of 70

Rudyard Kipling (1865 –1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He is most famous for “The Jungle Book" (1894), "If" (1895) and "Kim" (1901). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the United Kingdom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

“The Jungle Book” is considered Rudyard Kipling’s greatest success. The story of the boy Mowgli is world-famous - how he is raised in the Indian jungle by a family of wolves, and how he becomes the enemy of Shere Khan the tiger and a friend of Baloo the bear. Inspired by the wolves who raised Mowgli, the upper part of the champagne-tone gold-coated clip is artIficially worked into a wolf’s head and set with a diamond. In a luscious depiction of Mowgli’s life and his companions and in the jungle, the red lacquer cap and barrel are decorated with a pattern of jungle vines and overlaid with an intricate design of monkeys and bamboo created from champagne-tone gold, partly platinum-coated. The eyes of the monkeys and the wolf are set in diamonds.

Kipling’s highly regarded short stories established his literary fame early on. Breaking radically with literary taboos, Kipling was like a hurricane whirling through the dusty landscape of English literature with a great wealth of ideas, stylistic brilliance, and new content. He occupied himself with the real world of people who worked and suffered. In this, he overcame all barriers of race and class, integrating jargon and slang into his stories. In honour of the pioneer of the modern short story and the world traveler Rudyard Kipling, the handcrafted champagne-tone gold nib is engraved with an elephant head. A further token of his beloved Indian landscape can be found in the bamboo engraving on the solid champagne-tone gold forepart.

The crown jewel of Kipling’s works is the novel “Kim” - a novel imbued with Kipling’s great love of India, its humanity, spirituality, and timelessness, revealing, with great eloquence, a panoramic view of an India that is rich in adventure and encounters. The pen is artfully engraved on the clip with two buildings from the city of Chittorgarh, which Kipling visited in his travels. They symbolize both the deserted ‘Cold Lairs’ in “the Jungle Book” volumes and the variety of Indian buildings. The cap top is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl.

Kipling’s memorable poem “If” circled the globe in over 30 languages. Each line beginning with ‘“If”’ leads to a different situation that can only be mastered with classic virtues such as patience, honesty, reason and focus on the essentials. Kipling ends the poem, written in 1895 for his son John, with the words ‘Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, / And - which is more - you’ll be a Man, my son!’ The beginning and the end of the poem are engraved on the cap top and cone ring of the edition: ‘IF YOU CAN KEEP YOUR HEAD WHEN ALL ABOUT YOU ARE LOSING THEIRS’ ......... YOU’LL BE A MAN, MY SON!’.
