Ernest Hemingway
The coral red and dark brown of the Writers Edition Hemingway is reminiscent of a Montblanc fountain pen from the 1930s – the decade in which Hemingway celebrated his earliest success. The cap, with its gold-plated mountings and classical, gold-plated clip, bears the engraved signature of the writer. Rhodium-platings and an artistic engraving of a motif from Hemingway’s period decorate the hand-cut 18-carat gold nib.
Ernest Hemingway was undoubtedly one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, and he still inspires discriminating literature enthusiasts all around the world. In works such as “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “The Old Man and the Sea”, Hemingway was remarkable for his powers of verbal expression and the denseness of his narratives. Hemingway thus became not only a model for a whole generation of writers, but also a challenge – which most of them failed to meet.

Agatha Christie
The 1993 Writers Edition pen was dedicated to Agatha Christie, one of the most widely read writers of all time, with an estimated 4 billion published books. The design is based on the classic style of the early 1920s. Around the cap, made of black resin, winds a snake made of 925 sterling silver, which hints at the creeping tension of the author’s novels and also serves as the clip of the pen. The eyes of the snake are set with two rubies that glint bewitchingly. The head of the snake is also engraved on the rhodium-plated 18-karat gold nib. Each Agatha Christie Writers Edition pen is also decorated with the signature of the grande dame of the crime novel.
The 4810 Limited Edition fountain pen has the clip done in vermeil with the snakes eyes in sapphires.

Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde is quoted as having said: “I have very simple tastes. I am always satisfied with the very best.” This sentiment is reflected in every pen in the Writers Edition created in his honour. The unconventionally decorated barrel and the many details hint at the passionate spirit of Oscar Wilde. Both the clip and the mountings are made of gold-plated 925 sterling silver. An engraved signature of the author decorates the cap of the pen. And the handmade 18-karat gold nib, with its highly detailed engravings in the style of the age in which Wilde lived, complete this extraordinary tribute to an extraordinary person.
Oscar Wilde’s revolutionary views on the society of his day, his fight for aesthetic and moral freedom and his belief in individuality and simultaneous rejection of convention made this flamboyant man of letters a legend in his own time. As a central figure of London society at the end of the 19th century, he lived a decadent lifestyle, which exposed him more than once to the sharp criticism of the bourgeoisie. In addition to brilliant works such as “The Picture of Dorian Gray” and “The Canterville Ghost”, Oscar Wilde wrote numerous essays, poems and plays.

Voltaire
The Writers Edition Voltaire seems to reflect the fascinating personality of Voltaire in every detail. The surface of black precious resin appears just as unfathomable as his thoughts. The engraved mountings and the cap top in vermeil – gold-plated 925 sterling silver – are as rich as the possessions of Voltaire, whose gold-coloured signature decorates the cap of the pen. The 18-karat gold nib, made by a master craftsman, is finished off by delicate engravings reminiscent of the age of Voltaire.
Voltaire and his immense body of work, including comedies, philosophical discourses and letters, are unparalleled in modern times. Although even in his early years he came into conflict with the authorities because of the belligerency of his writings, his dramatic talent – which he used to create works such as “Candide” – made him one of the most acclaimed literary figures of his time. In his older years, Voltaire dedicated himself increasingly to philosophy. Writings such as the “Philosophical Dictionary” continue to provoke the deepest discussions, and keep alive Voltaire’s memory as the spiritual father of the Enlightenment.

Alexandre Dumas
Just as perfect as the work of this great novelist are the Alexandre Dumas Writers Edition pens. Created from the finest of materials, they have a mysterious shimmering appearance which is set off by a dark brown precious resin cap. On top of this, every detail emphasises the personality of Alexandre Dumas: the clip with its distinctive sword symbol, the rhodium-plated 18-karat gold nib, which is decorated by a fine engraving of a fleur-de-lis, and the gold-coloured signature on the cap.
Incidentally, the first specimens of the Writers Edition Alexandre Dumas that were made erroneously carried the signature of his son – a mistake that has made this version a rare collectors’ item.
Alexandre Dumas was one of the most important novelists and playwrights of the 19th century. He knew better than anyone how to combine effective dialogue, dramatic tension and lucid description in gripping stories. His intellectually stimulating and ambitious works still captivate a large readership all over the world – Dumas wrote nearly 300 novels, including such world-renowned classics as “The Three Musketeers” and “The Count of Monte Cristo”.

Fyodor Dostoevsky
Like the works of this immortal writer, it is on closer examination that the pens of the Writers Edition Dostoevsky reveal their full magic and passion. The delicate ornamentation of the black barrel and the gold-plated rings capture the imagination just as much as the domed sapphire-coloured stone set in the gold-plated clip. Along with the 18-karat gold nib – which is decorated with delicate ornamentation reminiscent of the era of the Russian Empire – these details make the pens from the Writers Edition Dostoevsky a fitting tribute to this great man of letters.
There is hardly any 20th century writer who does not cite Fyodor M. Dostoevsky as one of his or her greatest influences. Because Dostoevsky, like no other writer, explored the blackest depths of the human soul. His works, such as “Crime and Punishment”, “The Idiot” and “The Gambler” have captivated the whole world by their passionate character descriptions and their gripping plots.

Edgar Allan Poe
As with Poe’s works, in which logic and the supernatural are linked in a unique way, the Writers Edition Edgar A. Poe also demonstrates a profound aesthetic sense in every detail. The fascinating midnight blue marbling effect on the cap and the barrel gives the pen a mysterious gleam. Edgar Allan Poe’s gold-coloured signature is inscribed on the cap. Victorian ornamentation decorates the gold-plated ring under the clip and, as a further tribute to the author, the 18-karat gold nib has a delicate engraving of the raven from Poe’s famous poem.
Edgar Allan Poe gained world fame for his tales of horror and the supernatural. In works such as “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, Poe managed to create a unique blend of intellect, fantasy and morbidity. In “The Raven”, the grand master of the horror story created a poem that is still learned by almost every schoolchild in the English-speaking world. Although Edgar Allan Poe came under criticism throughout his life in the bourgeois American society of the 19th century, today he is acclaimed as a great and timeless author and as a pioneer of modern literature.

Marcel Proust
As a great writer and thinker, Marcel Proust always strove for the maximum depth of detail and precision – an aspiration shared by the Writers Edition Marcel Proust. The eight-sided barrel, with its delicate engravings, recalls the style prevailing in Proust’s most creative period and, like the mountings, consists of 925 sterling silver. The barrel is also decorated by the engraved signature of the writer. As a tribute to Marcel Proust’s most popular work, the rhodium-plated 18-karat gold nib bears a delicate engraving of an hourglass.
Marcel Proust, one of the most popular French authors and philosophers of his time, fascinated readers with his books and their brilliantly observed descriptions of people and nature, and, as a charismatic figure of the fine Paris salons, he also delighted people with his rhetoric and wit. In what is probably his most important work – “Remembrance of Things Past” – Proust’s new literary stylistic device, the inner monologue, was combined masterfully with his analytical descriptions, which, in their candour, often allow readers to see themselves in them.

Friedrich Schiller
The Writers Edition Schiller is made of a material that was a symbol of a changing society, especially in Schiller’s time – amber. It is elaborately worked, and this, along with the simple elegance of the delicate gold-plated mountings, evokes the style of the heyday of Weimar classicism. Schiller’s signature is inscribed on the cap. The finely-engraved 18-karat gold nib is decorated with a small crossbow as a tribute to “William Tell”, one of his best-known pieces.
Friedrich Schiller dedicated all his literary and dramatic talent to a central theme: freedom. The success of pieces such as “The Robbers”, “Mary Stuart”, “William Tell” and “Wallenstein” shows how precisely Schiller captured the spirit of a century of revolution and radical change, again and again.

Charles Dickens
The Victorian era is generally viewed as one of the most outstanding periods of English culture. Its special elegance is recaptured in the pens from the Writers Edition Charles Dickens. The barrel, made of the finest greenish precious resin, is decorated by the writer’s signature. The 925 sterling silver fluted cap and the rhodium-plated 18-karat gold nib, with its engraving of the monogram of Charles Dickens, provide an elegant finishing touch to this tribute to the most famous author of the Victorian era.
Charles Dickens is still one of the best-known and most frequently read authors of English literature. His unique skill for creating true pictures from words, his unerring feel for the mood of Victorian England and the power and passion of his trenchant and satirical narratives have alternately made his readers laugh and moved them to tears. Charles Dickens’ masterpieces such as “Oliver Twist” and “David Copperfield” have not lost any of their fascination, even in today’s world.

F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Writers Edition F. Scott Fitzgerald revives the glamour of the "Roaring Twenties". The shimmering white barrel forms a striking contrast to the black precious resin cap, which is decorated by the signature of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Dignified tribute is paid to the origins of the legendary Art Deco style by the delicately engraved 1920s urban skyline that decorates the rhodium-plated 18-karat gold nib.
The roaring twenties were the age of extravagance and Art Deco. The people of its jazz age generation had a ball with the Charleston and champagne – and F. Scott Fitzgerald was their idol. Although Fitzgerald enjoyed the high-society life, in his outstanding works such as “The Great Gatsby” and “This Side of Paradise” he drew a subtle psychological portrait of the hedonistic America of the 1920s, which allowed the inescapable tragedy beneath the glittering surface to show through.

Jules Verne
The Writers Edition Jules Verne delves deep into the fascinating world of the writer. The barrel, made of bright blue lacquer with platinum-plated mountings, is surrounded by a guilloche consisting of even-sized waves. Jules Verne’s signature decorates the cap of the writing instrument, and a delicate engraving of an antique diver’s helmet on the rhodium-plated 18- karat gold nib of the fountain pen recalls one of his most famous novels, “Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea”.
In his novels, Jules Verne took his readers away on fantastic journeys: voyages around the world, deep under the sea or to the moon. He excited the imaginations of the people of his time with his fictional adventures, and also created a new genre: science fiction. Jules Verne is still considered the father, and at the same time the most important exponent, of this genre of literature.

Franz Kafka
The design of the Writers Edition Franz Kafka is not only reminiscent of the simple and yet artful style of its eponym, but also pays tribute to Kafka’s most famous work: “The Metamorphosis”. In the fascinating change from square to round in the writing instrument’s form, the metamorphosis described in Kafka’s story has found its equivalent. Top, clip and rings made of 925 sterling silver offer a thrilling contrast to the dark red translucent aura of the barrel. A further reference to “The Metamorphosis” is on the rhodium-plated 18-karat gold nib: a finely engraved cockroach.
With masterworks such as “The Trial”, “The Judgement” and “The Metamorphosis”, Franz Kafka became the literary model of a whole generation. Having died young from a severe disease, the crosser of literary frontiers between dream and reality did not, however, come to enjoy a worldwide reputation until after 1945: in the following years, his unique writing style made literary history with the notion of the “Kafkaesque”.

Miguel de Cervantes
The design of the Writers Edition Miguel de Cervantes was inspired by the windmills whose shape is reflected in the writing instrument and clip. Their form, tapering in opposing directions, symbolises the different characters of the hero Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza. The body of the Edition shines in brown marbled lacquer and is embellished with the writer´s signature. The handmade 18-karat gold nib is delicately engraved with the outline of a windmill.
Born in Alcalá de Henares near Madrid in 1547, Miguel de Cervantes grew up as the son of an impoverished nobleman. After several adventurous stages in his life, he was imprisoned for embezzlement. Here he finally found the time to begin his masterpiece about an impoverished nobleman who considers himself to be a noble knight. In Don Quixote´s failure - as in his fight against the windmills - Cervantes shows the contrasts between the fantastic world of knights and the everyday life of simple people.

Virginia Woolf
The Writers Edition “Virginia Woolf” is oriented impressively to the literary heritage of the writer it is named after: 75 years after the publication of the novel “The Waves”, finely engraved guilloche work recalls Virginia Woolf’s most outstanding work and her eventful life. In the form of waves, the guilloche work covers the body of jet-black precious resin, underlining the lightly curved silhouette. The most eye-catching feature is a faceted ruby on the gilt clip, symbolising the individuality of Virginia Woolf’s avant-garde style and the climax of her literary creation. The 18-carat gold nib reveals the tragic end of the successful writer: the two elm trees, under which Virginia Woolf found her last resting place on her estate in Sussex in 1941, are masterfully engraved for eternity in the handmade nib.
Virginia Woolf is considered to be one of the first representatives of classical modernism. She developed the story-telling technique of the “interior monologue”, which she used most consistently in her novel “The Waves”, which appeared in 1931. Virginia Woolf shaped this avant-garde technique with an expressly feminine subjectivity and autobiographical elements to create milestones in feminist literature such as “Orlando” or “Mrs Dalloway”. There is no doubt that Virginia Woolf was one of the most pioneering and innovative female novelists of the early 20th century. Her rejection of Victorian conversations and her radical renunciation of literary traditions derived from an intellectually outstanding mind and a strong character.

William Faulkner
The Writers Edition “William Faulkner” is dedicated to the literary master of modernism. The shape and surface of this unique writing instrument are reminiscent of the novelist’s early creative period and the style of art déco. The black-brown precious resin, shimmering like mother-of-pearl, meets the bright brilliance of the platinum finish with its subtle ring structure. This represents a shift in point of view as we encounter it in Faulkner’s works.
The hand-crafted nib is particularly distinct. It is a reference to another great passion of the writer: aerobatics. Faulkner’s biplane glides through layer after layer of clouds on the platinum-plated 18-K gold nib.
William Faulkner was one of the most significant American novelists of the 20th century. In his more than 50 books – novels, short stories and anthologies – he described again and again the beauty and tragedy of his homeland by the Mississippi River. Faulkner was driven by the literary urge “to cram all of human history into one sentence”. To this day he thus manages to draw his readers into a maelstrom of dramatic destinies, deteriorated values, violence and death, guilt and punishment.
It is to his avant-garde experiments with new stylistic elements, interwoven plots and complex shifts in points of view that the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner owes his international fame – and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949.

George Bernard Shaw
Dark green marbled lacquer punctuated with platinum-plated fittings. These are the style features of the new Writers Edition in honour of the distinguished Irish free thinker George Bernard Shaw. This pen is inspired by Shaw’s best-known character from his play “Pygmalion”: Eliza Doolittle. Just as Eliza, a poor flower girl, is brought up to be an aristocratic lady, so the fine platinum of the pen is replaced more and more towards the cap by the opulent dark green of the precious resin. This deep, marbled green, indeed, originally represents the lush green meadows of Ireland that Shaw left behind. And lastly, the hand-made 18 carat gold nib beautifully engraved with a flower evokes Shaw’s figure of the flower girl.
George Bernard Shaw, the great master of language, was born in Ireland in 1856. Although he left his native land at the age of 20 to become a theatre critic and writer in London, he always retained links with his country. He used his talent not only to create magnificent, subtle dramatic pieces, but always in addition to highlight the problems of the disadvantaged. For this reason, his name is one of few to be associated with brilliant repartee and sharp-tongued criticism of social evils. The quintessence of this unique artist’s attitude to life is his play “Pygmalion”, in which the poor flower girl Eliza Doolittle is transformed into a fine lady by a professor of phonetics. With much subtle humour, Shaw draws attention to the enormous social inequalities in contemporary England. George Bernard Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1925.

Thomas Mann
Thomas Mann’s masterpiece “Buddenbrooks” has brought him immortality and has turned him into one of the most famous writers of the 20th century. Montblanc is paying tribute to this unique wordsmith with an equally unique Writers Edition. The platinum-plated inlays in the rich black lacquer of this writing instrument are inspired by the age of artistic creativity in which Thomas Mann lived: the Art Deco era. The interplay of colours and materials symbolises the different relationships between the characters in “Buddenbrooks”.

Jonathan Swift
Montblanc now dedicates an edition of writing instruments to the great satirist of British-Irish literature, Jonathan Swift. Its design is inspired by his novel “Gulliver’s Travels”. The barrel is made of black lacquer and decorated with multi-layered inlays reminiscent of the ropes that were used to bind Gulliver on the beach of Lilliput island. The cap is made of precious black resin and shaped like Gulliver’s tricorn. It bears the signature of Jonathan Swift. The clip depicts the staircase the mayor of Lilliput had to climb to be able to talk to Gulliver. Both clip and fittings are platinum-plated. The rhodium-plated 18 K gold nib is decorated with an elaborate engraving showing the imperial army of Lilliput marching between Gulliver’s legs. It completes a truly outstanding Writers Edition dedicated to Jonathan Swift, a great author and the creator of “Gulliver’s Travels”.

Honoré de Balzac
With this limited edition Montblanc pays homage to Honoré de Balzac in a writing instrument that is as extraordinary as the writer himself. In its form and design it unmistakably recalls Balzac’s stature and mode of dress, with his pointed shoes being expressed in the shape of the cone. The black high-grade resin cap and the dark grey body decorated with fine stripes pay tribute to the “cutaway” – an indispensable component of Balzac’s wardrobe. He often carried a magnificently decorated walking stick, which is recalled in the platinum-plated clip with turquoise inlay. The engraved initials of Balzac, in typical lead typesetting letters on the partly rhodium-plated 18 K/750 solid gold nib of the Writers Edition recall the time he spent as an author, printer and publisher. One of the main features of this limited edition are the three rings which symbolise the social classes in 19th century France which Balzac so brilliantly described in his masterpiece "La Comédie Humaine": the opulent, gold-coated cap head ring stands for the nobility, the platinum-plated, discreetly decorated cap ring for the bourgeoisie, and the simply worked cone ring for the lower social strata.
The great writer’s signature decorates the cap as a fine engraving, providing the finishing touch to this extraordinary Writers Edition in honour of Honoré de Balzac.

Daniel de Defoe
The Writers Edition 2014 pays tribute to Daniel Defoe, an English novelist, pamphleteer and journalist, who is most famous for being the author of "Robinson Crusoe" (1719), the story of a man shipwrecked alone on an island. Defoe is considered to be one of the founders of the English novel, with "Robinson Crusoe" marking the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. The overall shape of the Writers Edition refers to the paddle with which Crusoe attempted to escape from the abandoned island. The pattern recalls wooden grain and the fittings are inspired by the original book cover of "Robinson Crusoe". The clip appears as a feather, in reference to Robinson Crusoe's faithful companion, his parrot.

Leo Tolstoy
Issued every year since 1992 in a strictly limited edition, the Montblanc Writers Edition pays tribute to the greatest icons of literary history. Leo Tolstoy, the Russian master of realist fiction and author of epic works such as “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina”, is the latest figure of world literature to be honoured with a limited edition inspired by his life and cultural legacy.
In addition to penning some of the world’s most important novels, Count Leo Tolstoy (1828 – 1910) spent much of his life striving for moral perfection and searching for the true meaning of life. It was Leo Tolstoy’s accurate depiction of human sensibilities and his vivid expressiveness that led to his meteoric rise to fame, becoming the most prominent figure in Russian realist storytelling. Over time, the great author increasingly developed into a Christian thinker and engaged in a non-violent struggle against the capitalisation of society, the inequality of serfdom and the dominance of church and state, leading to his religious and socio-critical writings being subjected to tsarist censorship.
In addition to his literary legacy, Tolstoy promoted the idea of education for all by establishing numerous schools to improve the education of the rural population, and published a monthly journal in which he disseminated his ideas about free education.
Tolstoy adhered to his teachings of finding happiness in the simple life led by peasants, a theme reflected in the simplicity of the overall shape and design of the writing instrument. The characteristic pillars at the entrance of the Yasnaya Polyana estate are echoed in the shape of the top of the cap, which is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in black and white resin. Tolstoy’s philosophy of working the land with his own hands is symbolized in the elaborately handcrafted, hammered and silver plated case of the barrel.
The dark grey precious resin cap, blue marbled resin cone and platinum plated fittings mirror the colours found on the covers of his first major works as well as the colours of the modest study in which he wrote his most important works. The ornament on the cap ring is inspired by a traditional woven Russian pattern that would have adorned the modest peasant smocks Tolstoy made for himself. The great author’s signature is engraved on the cap while the family’s aristocratic coat-of-arms is featuring the rhodium-plated 750 solid gold nib of the fountain pen, a subtle design detail that highlights his provenance and the value he placed on family.

For the first time Montblanc launched a very limited edition pen next to the regular Writers Editions, made in a limited production of 1868 pieces referring to the year his book "War and Peace" was first published.
Yasnaya Polyana, the family home where Tolstoy was born and where he resided with his wife and children is the inspiration for the Limited Edition Leo Tolstoy. Tolstoy's philosophy of working the land with his own hands is reflected in a hammered gold barrel. The cap has a fine guilloche work covered with a transparent blue lacquer, the end of the barrel and the filling button are made of wood topped with a malachite cabochon.
The colours selected are consistent with the covers of his first major works and with the colour scheme of his working room where he wrote his most important works.

William Shakespeare
Shakespeare’s language is full of vivid imagery, encompassing a huge stylistic range. One key to his work is his passion for English history, through which he represented the world with all its human contradictions. The broad spectrum of Shakespeare’s plays, ranging from dark dramas to light comedies, is honoured in the Writers Edition William Shakespeare with black and white precious resin. This also recalls the colours of the flags that were raised above the theatre according to whichever genre was to be played. The body of the writing instrument with its fine engraving represents a quill pen, and the clip ring recalls the golden earring Shakespeare wore in his most famous portrait, the Chandos portrait.

William Shakespeare Set - Fountain Pen, Rollerball, Ballpoint and Pencil |
The octagonal shape on the cap recalls the Globe Theatre in London - The William Shakespeare Theatre. The black and white colours of the writing instrument are inspired by the different flags of the theatre, which indicated the genre of the play: white for comedy, black for tragedy. The structure of the barrel is inspired by his Quill pen and the cone ring is dedicated to the elements of each major play - "Hamlet", "Romeo & Juliet", "Henry V" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream". The clip together with the ring is inspired by Shakespeare's signature earring and the Au 750 solid gold nib is designed from a scene in "Romeo & Juliet". The Writers Edition William Shakespeare is limited to 1597 pieces in reference to his most important play, "The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet", issued in 1597.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
The overall design and shape is inspired by his iconic Caudron Simoun plane and his famous novel "Night Flight". Engravings on the barrel and cap show the sky as seen by Saint-Exupéry on the 1st of November 1929 at 23:00. As the director of the newly formed company Aeroposta Argentina S.A, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry conducted Aeroposta's inaugural flight on 1 November 1929, flying from an airfield at Villa Harding Green to Comodoro Rivadavia. The fittings are inspired by the cockpit of his plane. The geographic positions of important cities in Saint-Exupéry's life are engraved on the cone. The nib recalls his most famous novel, “The Little Prince”.

Homer
The shape of the Homage to Homer, available as a fountain pen, rollerball, ballpoint and a mechanical pencil available only as part of a complete set, is inspired by the Odyssey, Homer’s second epic poem about the journey undertaken by Odysseus returning home from the Trojan War—a journey that took ten years. You may remember the strategy employed by the Greeks, which involved a huge wooden horse designed to cloak Greek soldiers inside that ultimately insured their victory. Thus, the pen’s profile is that of a stylized head and body of the famed wooden horse.
The pen’s cap and barrel are matte black resin, set off by champagne-tone gold fittings and the overall effect reminds me of antique Greek pottery that is so often decorated with scenes from Greek history. The shape of the clip is in reference to Achilles' spear, from Homer’s Iliad and Achilles’ helmet is engraved on the gold nib. The cap is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in precious resin.
A second variation, the Montblanc Writers Edition, Homage to Homer Limited Edition 1581, features the same silhouette of the aforementioned pen, this time in another color often seen in classical Greek pottery: coral. The gold-coated inlay on the cap is reminiscent of Achilles' armor, while the champagne-tone gold components are decorated with an engraving representing the dactylic hexameter associated with ancient Greek epic poetry. On this variation, the Montblanc emblem on the cap crown is crafted in mother-of-pearl. The number of pens in this edition (1,581) is in reference to the year of the first translation to English of Homer’s Iliad.
