Hints on identifying Montblanc Meisterstuck Replicas / Fakes

Montblanc counterfeits are a serious issue for pen collectors, especially when buying from secondary markets, such as auctions, internet sites, etc.

Here are some basic tips on how to spot a fake Montblanc and also a couple of videos that reinforce the various steps one can take to reduce the risks.
  1. The nib is the most difficult aspect to fake in any pen. Always look and ask, if necessary, for a close up picture of the nib section - iridium tip and 'Made in Germany' stamped on the nib is a dead give away. To my knowledge, Mont Blanc do not stamp 'iridium tip' on their nibs. The exception to this is the Genuine Montblanc StarWalker pen - it does have the words 'iridium' stamped on the nib section, is nearly always silver (hence, this pen is faked more than any other).
  2. Check carefully the nib engraving. On genuine pens the etching is deep and precise, very sharp. Counterfeit products are clearly not as well done and is not as deeply done.
  3. Ask for a picture of the underside/feed of the nib section. A genuine Montblanc's feed will be aligned perfectly with the ink aperture between the tines (a genuine article is accurately produced down to the smallest detail).
  4. Before you bid, you may want to get an emailed assurance from the seller that it is a genuine Montblanc - because if turns out that it isn't , you can ask for your money back or get the auction site involved. If you get a vague response to your question - don't bid.
  5. Shine a powerful flashlight through the barrels and caps of any resin Montblanc. Even though these pens are black in normal light, they are all transparent ruby red when illuminated from behind by a strong light. also, this natural material is able to hold an electric charge (much like amber), feels more organic and doesn't feel cold to the touch.
  6. The Meisterstuck pens manufactured after 1991 have all a serial number on the clip ring at the top of cap. After 1997, these pens also have the PIX trademark on the underside of the clip. Pens manufactured before 1991 only have the word Germany or W-Germany etched on the clip ring at the top of the cap - not a serial number.
  7. On the internet, make sure you purchase from a reputable seller (check how many reviews and the rate of satisfaction) and one who also has taken time and care to post detailed photos of the products he sells.
  8. Use common sense - if the price sounds too good, then there's a strong probability that it is a fake.
